Penholder Question

Postby 729 fx » Fri May 22, 2009 2:31 am

I have a question to all penholders - what is the correct way to hold the bat using J pen and C pen?
(Refering to the position of middle, ring & little finger).

Ryu SM of Korea tends to straighten his finger while Kim TS tends to curl his.

Based on my experience, a straighten fingers, will result in more control and accurate ball placement (suitable for a looping game) while if curled the finger the wrist will be loose which will produce more spin.

What are your thoughts?
1) Primary set-up : YinHe(Galaxy) 986 Sriver FX / Pluto
2) Spare set-up 1 : Japan LAK - CJ8000 / 799 OX
3) Spare set-up 2 : Palio T7 - White Shark / 729 FX

Take a look at some of those training videos that is available for download. They all show how to hold bat at the begining.

Although I'm not a penholder myself, I defiantly agree on your theory of straight fingers and curled fingers. I sometimes mess around by playing penhold on my shake hand blade, although somewhat uncomfortable it sort of works.

Sincerely,

Yes, John. I think so too.

For shakehanders, I find that their grip is more natural as compared with penholder grip.

720 fx, is it possible for you to post the pictures of your grip as well as these players. That will help the discussion.

This is awesome.

Bring in the pictures of some previous Chinese players penhold grips. What is the name of that Chinese Coach - he was the Coach for the Olympics. Isn't he a penhold player?

Yes, that is.

This topic is a side dish for me for at least few months. Excellent analysis of the grip. Thanks 729. Lets dig deep into some of these players tactics. We may have videos of these players at http://vimeo.com/channels/tabletennis.
