2009 Asian TTChampionship, Lucknow, India - 16 - 22 Nov 2009

Postby 729 fx » Sun Nov 15, 2009 8:48 pm

This event starts today, 16th November 2009.
List of players : http://www.ittf.com/ittf_misc/Asian_Cha ... LAYERS.pdf

No Wang Hao (but got Wu Hao), no Ma Lin, No Ma Long in the Chinese line-up.
My guess is that China is sending their back-up players (for everyone information, Wu Hao played in Ma Long's team during the China National) for this event. Also no Ryu SM, Oh SE etc from the Korean team.

However, India is sending their best players for this event as well as made good preparation for this event. Player like Sharath Kamal Achanta, India’s leading player and the Dome, a temporary structure erected seven days ago as the practice hall. The superb dome staged structure has a floor space of 200 x 100 feet, 800 watt halogen lamps provide splendid illumination, 16 tables are housed and the venue is solely for practice.

Adjacent is the main hall, the Badminton Centre, for the competition; there are eight Joola table tennis tables situated on the deep red Stag floor with 150 800 watt lamps plus elegant tiered seating is in place, to provide model conditions.

On the day before the tournament the final touches are being made, the television cameras are in place, one placed above the show court table to give a bird’s eye view; India is ready and table tennis is ready to challenge cricket.

Well, it is known that several famous Indian cricketers do enjoy table tennis; Sachin Tendulkar owns a Stag table tennis table, Surav Ganguly enjoys the sport as does Kapil Dev, one of cricket’s great all-rounders, a man who in his era set new records in the sport.

Now, the fixtures for this event are organised in two stages for the First Division. The first stage comprises group fixtures; the second stage is based on the knock-out principle with play-off contests for the final positions.

However, the Championship Division is somewhat different. The competition starts at the quarter-final stage and follows the knock-out principle; play-off matches are held to determine the final order.

All fixtures follow the World Championships formula of three players per team competing in five singles matches (A v X, B v Y, C v Z, A v Y, B v X); all matches are best of five games
The finals of the Championships Division will be played on Thursday 19th November 2009.

Updates from Lucknow.
China, the favorite team, remains on course to retain the Men’s and Women’s Team titles at the Asian Championships following semi-final successes on Wednesday, 18th November 2009. The men’s team recorded a three-one penultimate round victory over Hong Kong, whilst the women succeeded by beating Korea by three matches to nil.

Comfortable wins for China but for their adversaries anything but comfortable passages to the final; Japan in the Men’s Team event and Singapore in the Women’s competition were both stretched to the five match limit.

Japan defeated Chinese Taipei with Jun Mizutani the backbone of the team. He beat both Chiang Peng-Lung and Chiang Chih-Yuan with Kaii Yoshida adding the vital win in the final duel. He beat Chiang Peng-Lung; the wins for Chinese Taipei came from Chuang Chih-Yuan in opposition to Kaii Yoshida and from Wu Chih-Chi against Kenta Matsudaira.

Meanwhile, for Singapore against Hong Kong it was very much a team effort with each member of the team recording one win each. Fang Ying and Wang Yue Gu both lost to Tie Yana but both beat Jiang Huajun with Sun Bei Bei adding the one further win; in the third match of the duel, she defeated Lin Ling.

Results -
Men’s Team Championship Division :
Semi-Finals
China 3-1 Hong Kong; Japan 3-2 Chinese Taipei
Positions 5-8
Korea 3-0 India; DPR Korea 3-1 Singapore

Women’s Team Championship Division :
Semi-Finals
China 3-0 Korea; Singapore 3-2 Hong Kong
Positions 5-8
Japan 3-0 Thailand; DPR Korea 3-1 Chinese Taipei

It was the star of the Indian team, no.1 player of India, Sharath Kamal Achanta.
He beat Wu Hao in five games to level matters after Wang Liqin had given China the lead by overcoming Soumyadeep Roy in three straight games.

Then in the reverse single, Sharath Kamal Achanta got 2 games off Wang Liqin before losing 3-2.
