The just concluded Intercontinental Cup (which precedes the World Team Cup) in Linz produces the Americas as the champion. Brazil and the United States of America won the respective Men’s and Women’s titles at the inaugural Intercontinental Team Cup in Linz on Thursday 22nd October 2009.

Represented by Thiago Monteiro, Gustavo Tsuboi, Hugo Hoyama and Cazuo Matsumoto, Brazil recorded a three-nil victory in their opening encounter against Australia, before posting three-one victories against Egypt and Canada.

Meanwhile, in the counterpart women’s event, the United States with Gao Jun, Crystal Huang and 13 year old Erica Wu , overcame Egypt and Venezuela both by the margin of three matches to nil, before facing Australia in the decisive duel to determine the top prize.

The contest went the full five match distance, with Crystal Huang saving four match points in the decisive contest against Vivian Tan, to secure victory.

Brazil now meets the Czech Republic whilst the United States confronts Romania; the prize at stake being a quarter final place in the World Team Cup.

It is for Cazuo Matsumoto his second Intercontinental title within the space of a week; in Moscow, seven days earlier he won the Intercontinental Men’s Singles title and thus qualified for the Men’s World Cup.

Final Placings
Men: 1. Brazil 2. Egypt 3. Canada 4. Australia
Women: 1. United States of America 2. Australia 3. Egypt 4. Venezuela
