I'm not sure where I would be next year. I planned to move to Texas this year, and did not happen. The Las Vegas was convenient for me. It is like 6 hours drives from my home. Flying to Michigan cost may cost little high. It's not popular as Las Vegas, so the flights may not give good deals. Secondly, attracting the players other than the game is important. I dont know whether GR, Michigan has something to offer. The Las Vegas attracts a lot of players from California who are in the driving distance. That many players may not come from the GR area.

I'm planning to go to the WTTC in Russia in May. That would be more fun than the US Open for me.

It is a little perplexing considering that I don't know any top ranked player from MI, whereas 18 out of the 50 top ranked men are from CA and 20 out of the 50 top women are from CA.

I think they are expecting more foreign players than US players, come to think of it.

Maybe the USATT wanted a change in venue after all these years having it on the West Coast of US.

I read from another forum that the reason that they are having it in GR next year is that there were 2 bids to have the US Open by GR, Michigan and another one by Milwaukee. One of the condition by ITTF is also to have teh Paralympic event in one of the venue. Hence, in order to pacify both parties, USATT awarded 2010 US Open to Michigan while Milwaukee will have it in 2011 together with the Paralympic event. Not sure whether this piece of news is true or not.
