Are Glues Fire Hazard?

Postby 729 fx » Fri Aug 21, 2009 5:47 am

I am wondering if water based glues are flammable.

Especially if you use a hairdrier to speed up the the drying process.

Also does the water based glue contains other things, like vinyl-based chemical?

Rokphish is right. The speed glue having VOC (speed glue of pre-ban era) is highly inflammable. On the container you will see those warnings. I remember an incident when I was in Ohio some two years ago. The Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger was in the building, and the security came running with sniffer dogs to every nook and corner of the building. The Killerspin booth had some speed glue bottles, and they were the ones who has got alarm first - the dogs jumped over the table instantly.

The hairdryer should not cause any problem because I have done this few times - sometimes I rush to the club and use a dryer to dry the glue.

The water based glue has a little chemical, so I think it is still inflammable. Using some candles or matches boxes near the glue can cause a fire.

I have seen many players confusing the water based glues to latex based glues. The latex based glues have little more voc content than the water based.

I think the table tennis manufactures have to print the voc content in the label so to help the players understand the risk. None of the water based glues don't have any label like that. We can make an assumption that the glue is not inflammable, but in reality it can be flammable.

Yes, I concurred on the statement that the table tennis manufactures have to print the voc content in the label of the glue so to help the players understand the risk. Currently none of the water based glues have any label like that.
Anyway we have to treat it as inflammable (we do not know if it is or not) to be on the safer side. It is better be safe than sorry.
