Charity Match - Penhold versus Shakehand

Postby 729 fx » Thu Jan 07, 2010 9:27 pm

I read from a Japanese site, there is going to be a Charity match held in Chengdu on Jan 14 that features a penholder team (consist of Ma lin, Wang Hao, Ryu Seung Min) versus Shakehand team (Wang Liqin, Timo Boll, Michael Maze). This is a major function initiated and organized by the Coaching Team of the Chinese National Teams to entertain as well as to raise fund for the young earthquake victims to show that the TT players care and love them with big hearts. There will be a strong interaction between the kids and the professional players. The kids must be getting very excited to meet their favorite players that will inspire them to work hard and fight for a better life.

At the same time the Chinese National Teams will award to the best Chinese TT player and the best Chinese TT coach of the year (2009) with the Gold Blade Trophy. The charity function is to promote the worldwide contribution of TT of No Boundary similar to Doctor of No Boundary and Engineer of No Boundary.

The awarding of the Gold Blade Trophy to the best TT player and the best coach is to encourage positive competition among the players and among the coaches within the Chinese National teams.

In my humble opinion, the match-up is a wee lop-sided, advantage to the penholder team. No Ma Long but Maze is in the shakehand team. Boll would beat Ryu, has a chance against Wang Hao, and would lose to Ma Lin. so thats 1 win, 1 loss, 1 unknown. Wang Liqin beats Ryu most of the time , against Ma Lin is a real 50/50, they have split their matchups 18-18, against Wang Hao same story, 50/50 about lifetime record. So Wang Liqin is not a sure bet in any of his matches. So that's 3 unknown.

Maze verses Ryu, somehow they have only played each other once and he won, but who knows. Wang Hao he is 1-1 but that one win was 5 years ago and Wang Hao would beat him. With Ma Lin he loses flat out, 0-7 against him. So he's 0 wins, 2 loss, 1 unknown.

Very interesting match-up here, though penhold has the better team as Maze is not a top 3 shakehander and Wang Liqin is slipping.

In my opinion Xu Xin should get the nod over Ryu SM. He is still the best J-pener but I think Xu Xin is at third best right now, behing Wang Hao & Ma Lin.

I am also looking forward to watching Wang Hao & Ma Lin plays after a long absence from competitive table tennis.
