As there was no category on South America, I will insert the following news report under North America. (Maybe we should rename the Category as Pan America)
The Ecuador International Open was staged at the High Performance Training Centre in Guayaquil on 2nd - 3rd September.
The host nation should be very proud as its talented 17 year old Ivan Proaño, from Quito, overcame Juan Vila (Dominican Republic), the top seed, in the ensuing Men’s Singles event, in five games. Alongside Dino Suarez, he remained unbeaten. The only "black mark" by the Ecuadorian outfit being the defeat of Nelson Salazar in five games by Juan Vila.
The Ecuador International Open is organised on the principles of the Olympic Games team system. The home team of Ivan Proaño, Dino Suarez and Nelson Salazar recorded a three-nil win against Peru’s Juan Carlos Luperdi, Aron Villavicencio and Johan Diaz followed by victory by the same margin against Guatemala’s Allan Guttierez, Jefferson Roach and Ricardo Ostos.
In the semi-finals stage, Ecuador `A’ meets the joint Dominican Republic/Ecuador team whilst Ecuador `B’ confronts Peru `B’.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Team event where there are five teams competing on a group basis, Peru represented by Meyling Guerra, Kimberly Chavez and Natalia Ocaña finished the day as the only unbeaten team.
They recorded a three-two win over Ecuador’s Tania Almendariz, Daniela Andrade and Astrid Salazar after earlier in the day defeating Guatemala’s Eva Godoy, Mabelyn Enriquez and Hellen Salazar by thee matches to nil.
Conclusion
Matches in the team events to be concluded on Thursday 3rd September 2009.
