Editing post which was published a long time ago

Postby varghese » Tue May 26, 2009 2:50 pm

eJunkie has sent me an email asking how to edit a post which was published some time ago. I thought it is a good idea to discuss this topic.

Let me first discuss how a post can be edited again? After you write a post and click SUBMIT, you will be taken to the page where you can see the post. On top of the post you will see a EDIT button. You can edit the post by using it. But there is a catch which I describe below.

There is some limitation when it comes to editing a post on the forum. The forum allows 5 minutes after you publish a post to edit it again. So, if you write a post at 7:00 AM, you have until 7:05 AM to edit it again. After 7:05 AM, you will not have permission to update it again. The main reason why the forum does this is to stop some members modifying the post in the case of a dispute.

I remember an incident that happened on a different forum. A member published my order information (my address, the equipment that I have purchased etc...) on that forum. A friend of mine called me and let me know this incident. I immediately sent an email to the online store why this information was leaked from their database. It is called privacy violation and it is not right. Within minutes I've noticed the forum post which had my address and everything was changed (this time the address was masked), and the store owner never agreed to leaking my personal information. So, there are some members who will abuse the EDIT post feature.

Let me know what do you guys think. I can extend the EDIT post duration from 5 minutes to like 15 minutes. The other option is to let the moderator know about the post, they take care of the post.

I follow a simple rule of thumb. By considering I have only 5 minutes to complete my post, I write the post first, preview it and then publish it. I really like the Firefox spelling check add-on. That spell-check add-on will display the typos with red underline.

I am sure most are just wanted it to make the post more readable. I have a bad habbit of typing too fast and use th wrong word and spelling that I like to see the ability to correct my mistake, but I don't mind as it is......
