Europe Super Cup

Postby 729 fx » Thu Oct 08, 2009 8:17 pm

The Europe Super Cup was originally to be held at Samara in south east Russia but the venue was moved to St Petersburg (to be precise at the Kometa Table Tennis Centre ), the city that hosted the Liebherr European Championships in 2008. This event will be held on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd December 2009.

The decision was made by the Russian Table Tennis Federation following the cancellation of 2010 ITTF Pro Tour tournament, originally scheduled for St Petersburg.

In accordance with the October rankings invitations will be sent to the leading European players with Germany’s Timo Boll seeking to complete a hat-trick of titles. He has emerged as the victor in both previous tournaments, the first being in Kazan in 2007, the second in Vidnoe, Moscow in 2008.
Other top European players invited are Vladimir Samsonov (Belarus), Michael Maze (Denmark), Werner Schlager(Austria), Dimitrij Ovtcharov(Germany), Kalinikos Kreanga(Greece) and Jörgen Persson(Sweden). Fedor Kuzmin, a semi-finalist in the Men’s Singles event at the recent Liebherr European Championships, will complete the line up being the host nation representative.

The reserves are Chen Weixing(Austria) and Zoran Primorac(Croatia).

Eurosport has already confirmed four hours of live coverage on each day and delayed coverage on Thursday 3rd December 2009.

Ever since Michael Maze won the European Championship he seems to be on the decline! In this Euro Super Cup he lost all his matches!

It only shows that Maze is also human.

Well, the result is out. Timo Boll is the only winner in the short history of the European Super Cup, winning in 2007, 2008, and also won the third edition (2009). In St. Petersburg, Boll overcame his compatriot, Dimitrij Ovtcharov, a surprise finalist, in four straight games and won the prize money of USD 50,000.

Boll’s toughest challenger in St. Petersburg was Vladimir Samsonov in the semis. Samsonov stretched Boll to the limit. Samsonov seemed already beaten in the sixth game when he was 3-6 down in points and 2-3 in games, but the 33 year old had the spectators on his side in St. Petersburg. He surprised Timo Boll with several clever services and levelled in games. However, Boll was the more active player in the seventh and dominated the last rallies. Samsonov saw an equal match, but “then I could not return Boll’s serves well”, the darling of the Russian public explained his difficulties in the last rallies.

The other semi-final match between Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Greek Kalinikos Kreanga saw again the German contender emerging as winner. The 21 year old Ovtcharov, born in Kiev, Ukraine, controlled the match most of the time beside a miserable second game. The match could have taken a different way however. Kreanga saved game points in the first set but missed to use his opportunities. If he had had a 2-0 lead in games, the pressure on Ovtcharov would have been much higher. But Ovtcharov won the close first game 15-13 and made life difficult for the 37 year old Greek with his services. Furthermore Kreanga’s normally superior backhand could not make the difference either; Ovtcharov as well is an excellent backhand play

In the match for the third position Vladimir Samsonov beat Kalinikos Kreanga with four games to one.
