The recently held Stag North American Championships 2009 in Laval, Quebec, Canada produced some notable results. Xavier Therien and Zhang Mo defended Canadian honours at the North American Championships. For Therien thanks to his four-two win over compatriot Pradeeban Peter-Paul he has earned a berth for the Liebherr Men's World Cup in Moscow in October.
Zhang Mo had her hands full with Ariel Hsing. The American youngster had four match points before Zhang was able to finish the match and claim her first North American title.
Homayoun Kamkar-Parsi was another Canadian on the podium and therefore Peter Li was the only American player awarded a medal in the Men’s Singles. While the Canadians are all 30 years and older, Li is only 16 and the future might belong to younger players like him or the Canadians Pierre-Luc Theriault and Shen Qiang.
Zhang Mo Prevails in a Thrilling Final
The Women’s Singles final was Canada versus USA, young versus very young; Zhang Mo, 20 years versus Ariel Hsing, 13 years old. In a nail-biting seventh game, the Canadian saved four match points eventually winning 13-11.
The bronze medallists were by Stephanie Yuen (CAN) and Lily Zhang, the other talented American girl from the Californian Bay Area.
