quiz6.
Supposed that Varghese is generously sharing his candies with his friends 729 and ejunkie. He sat us all down and bring out three big candies, some sweet and some salty. 729 likes sweet and there is one that's just for him. Since 729 can't tell which one is sweet and which is salty he waits for varghese and ejunkie to test taste the other two candies first.
Varghese and ejunkie want to test 729's ability to think. So they didn't tell him the taste after each have a go at their candy.
Varghese said to 729,"After my tasting of my candy I can't tell if yours is sweet or salty."
Then, ejunkie said to 729," Based on what Varghese said, I already can guess what you guys have, sweet or salty. 729, you havn't taste it yet, can you guess if your candy is sweet or salty?"
729 thought for a minute and answer,"My candy is sweet."
How did 729 guessed?

quiz7.
In a tournament, after a long day of playing three players emerged from a group with equal record to every single point. In order to choose a representitive of the group they decided to write the name "winner" on one of the three piece of papers and let then draw from a can.
Player A drew first and missed. Next should be Player B.
Player A put the blank piece of paper back to the can so that there were still three piece of papers.
The ref said," the blank piece of paper that you picked shouldn't be put back in."
Player A disagreed,"Ref, I picked from three piece of paper and my chance was one out of three. If I don't put it back then all Player B has to do is pick from one out two. His chance is 50%. That's not fair."
Is Player A right? Should the blank piece of paper be put back?

Honestly, I cannot think the answer to ejunkie's quiz 6.

For Quiz 7, I would put it to the umpire/referee to state that all 3 players A,B & C to pick the paper accordingly, ie Player A first, then B & C. Note : there are 3 papers, if A has taken the first, so be it. Next B will pick and C will get the balance piece of paper.
To me it is fair as unless A request B or C to pick first.

solution to quiz6:
1. If Varghese had a candy that's sweet, then he can be sure that 729's is salty. Since he can not be sure and make a conclusion, Varghese's must be salty.

2. If ejunkie's candy is sweet, he can also be sure the Varghese's and 729's are salty. He doesn't need to make his conclusion based on what Varghese just said. So ejunkies's candy must be salty also.

3. There were three candies and two were salty and one sweet. Since Varghese's and ejunkie's are salty, 729's must be sweet. He doesn't need to taste it to know.

729, in quiz7 the question is why or why not such picking is fair. The question posted by player A sounds valid. Is he right or wrong? And why?

Might as well post the solution.

Quiz7 solution:
Here is the ref's explaination. Player B does have a 50% chance of choosing the "winner", and so it seem that it's not fair since Player A has a 33% chance. However, Player B's 50% chance is under the consition that Player A doesn't win (i.e. picking the "winner"). The chance of Player A doesn't win is two out of three (two blank paper and one "winnner") or 67%. So Player's B's chance is 67% of 50% (67%x50%) or 33%, which is the same chance as Player A. So the blank piece of paper shouldn't be put back into the drawing.
If the ref did as Player A said and put the blank piece of paper back, then Player B 's chance of picking the "winner" is 67% of 33%, or 22%. That makes it truly unfair!

I hope those who has study probability enjoys this quiz. :P

729 fx wrote:I read from somewhere on the following quiz :

What is common between all these great blades?

Butterfly - Amultart, Jun Mizutani, Photino, Timo Boll Spirit
Donic - Kitex, Persson Carbotec
Joola - Chen Weixing, Fever, Rosskopf Force, Wing Fast, Wing Medium
Nittaku - Violin
Xiom - Control, Ignito, Stradivarius

Ooopps, forgot to provide the answer.
All the above blades have a common wood for their core - Kiri.

Next 2 quiz questions :
1) We have Butterfly, Joola, TSP, Stiga, Double Happiness, Double Fish, Tibhar etc table tennis balls. What is different about Dunlop Barna Super table tennis balls?

2) Who holds the record number of continental championships in Men Singles? (for the same continent)

1) I have never seen their tt balls, and so I am guessing they have an unusual material/property (such as transparency).
2) Give me a hint. Which continent is it held? I am guessing, again, an Afican or AUS top player.

I will give ejunkie the benefit of doubt for the 1st question - answer is that the Dunlop Barna tt ball is made of plastic, not celluloid.

Hint for 2nd question - it is on your continent, ejunkie.
