Remove Sealer From Blade

Postby 729 fx » Mon Sep 07, 2009 11:22 pm

I normally put between 1 - 3 thin layers of sealer on my blade before gluing rubber onto it. To remove it I use a strong solvent and rub the blade everywhere with a small paint brush. After a few minutes of round strokes your sealer and solvent will do some kind of thick paste that is easily removable with a razor blade or sand paper. I repeat the process twice and it is really clean.

I was told sanding off may be a bit risky because I could sand down the thickness of the ply and change the playing characteristics of teh blade. Some of my friends advised me of using acetone.

Any comments?

I don't seal my blades because I don't want to change any charcteristics of my blades, even if it's tiny. But if solvent can remove the sealer than it's not very useful because I sometimes have solvents on the rubber's sponge. There were more frequent use in the old days when gluing and tuning were the norm. I still use solvent to remove rubber cement built-up and not always would I wait for the sponge to dry completely to put the rubbers back on. A little solvent left would keep the sponge soft for the day. Solvent like lighter fluid and oils like paraffin would still have to be use even with Tenergy because rubber cement builts up fast when I test different combinations. If I have to take rubber cement off, and same goes for sealers, I would use slovents and not physical means--are you paying attention, Varghese?

Thanks for the reply, ejunkie.

At least lighter oil or paraffin oil can also do the "trick".

I seal the blade. I use two different ones. The first is the XIOM I-SURE which is a water based blade protector. The water based XIOM I-BOND glue that I use requires the XIOM I-SURE. The second kind of sealant I use is TSP Blade Varnish. It is kinda solution. If I use the latex based glue, I use the TSP Balde Varnish.

I never do anything on the blade to remove the sealant. The XIOM I-SURE makes a thin layer on the blade. That is removable, but I don't touch it.

The sealing is not required every time when you re-glue. I do it like every 3 to 4 weeks.
