Let's review Butterfly Tenergy 05.

We are going to discuss the following characteristics to find Butterfly Tenergy 05's real power.

Users:

1. The world class players using Butterfly Tenergy 05.
2. The style of table tennis players using Butterfly Tenergy 05.

Specifications:

3. Speed, Spin and Hardness according the manufacturer.
4. Loop Angle and net coverage.
5. Year it was released.

Spin:

6. Rotations during serve without any force on the ball.
7. Rotations during serve when the force is applied.
8. Spin Generation - no spin, under, top and side spin.

Speed:

9. Precision on targets.
10. Directional travel.
11. Behavior to a 25 mph traveling top spin ball.
12. Behavior to a 50 mph traveling top spin ball.
13. Behavior to a 75 mph traveling top spin ball.
14. Behavior on woods that blades are made of.

Rebound:

15. The force and friction required to lift a 0 spin ball.
16. The force and friction required to lift a +2 spin ball.
17. The force and friction required to lift a +5 spin ball.
18. The force and friction required to lift a +10 spin ball.

Power:

19. The power range it can generate.

Lifting:

20. The force and friction required to lift a 0 spin ball.
21. The force and friction required to lift a -2 spin ball.
22. The force and friction required to lift a -5 spin ball.
23. The force and friction required to lift a -10 spin ball.

Strokes:

24. Controlled Looping
25. Speed Looping
26. Spin Looping
27. Blocking
28. Driving
29. Counter Looping
30. Hitting
31. Hook Loop
32. Side Spin Loop

Disturbances:

33. The striking behavior on balls based on the elevation of the playing area.
34. The striking behavior on balls based on the atmospheric disturbances like wind.

Maintenance:

35. Behavior to water or rubber cleaning solution to its surface.
36. Durability or hours of use.
37. Glue effect - both water based and VOC glues

Guidelines:

1. Try to compare with a rubber that you already have like Butterfly Bryce.
2. List the blade also you have tried the rubber with.
3. Try to avoid terms like "it is spinny". Try to be more precise in measurement.
4. Go with the item in the list you are more familiar with.

With the short time I tried it I found that T05 is got a lot of dwell time because of the new spring sponge. I find it soft, mainly because I use hard sponged Chinese rubbers. I have always been a big fan of the Butterfly High Tension rubbers like Bryce, Sriver g2fx, etc. They are great for my backhand, but I like T05 for my forehand. I tried T05 on Schlager Carbon, Korbel, and Acoustic and found that I like the control of the Acoustic combination. Extremly controlable and spinny for close to the table and mid-distance. I will continue later when I think of more to say.

...like DHS Hurricane II or III? Have you used speed glue with those Chinese rubbers?

To play the Chinese rubbers well, you not only need to speed glue it but also use alot of booster to soften the sponge. The best I heard is the Chinese speed glue. I tried Stiga and later I use saver stuff like paraffin oil and other products.

Chinese sponge feels very hard and the rubber's dwell time comes mainly from the sticky surface whereas T05 work mostly because of the spring sponge.

In my analogy, it seems that Butterfly made the Tenergy 05 for the Chinese players. But it did not give the speed glue effect and feel that Chinese rubbers (with speed glue) offered. The Japanese rubbers have its own feeling, and I don't think it can replace a Chinese rubber feel.

Are there any Chinese players using Tenergy 05?

There are some Chinese rubber with soft/medium soft sponge (for example LKT Rapid soft) but the majority of the rubbers ranges from medium hard to hard sponge. The European or Japanese (Butterfly,Yasaka, TSP etc) rubbers generally have medium to softer sponge.

I agree with Varghese that there are a lot of difference between Chinese rubber glued and Tenergy. On hits that you don't put into a lot of energy the Chinese rubbers generate more spin with the surface than Tenergy. On higher efford loops Tenergy is faster and just as spiny (but may feel topped out against one or two very hard sponged Chinese rubbers). It is critical too that you use a slow ALL blade for Tenergy to get all of the spin from the rubber because it does not lack speed even with an ALL blade. As to which is better I am still sitting on the fence. Right now I am still a Hurricane/Skyline fan but if Butterfly can make their rubber sticker it's all over for DHS.

I could be wrong but I have seen more non-Chinese top players (Europeans, Japanese, Korean, etc.) Tenergy than Chinese.

You are right. Non-Chinese player(from China) like Kenta Matsudaira(Japan) & Chiang Hung-Chieh(Taiwan) used Tenergy 05.
