Tips On Improving Footwork

Postby 729 fx » Mon Oct 12, 2009 9:34 pm

I can think of the followings :
1) Rope Skipping
2) Shadow footwork movement
3) Sprint training
4) Cone drills
5) Agility ladder drills
6) Speed rope jumping (maybe similar to no. 1 but with speed)

Any others?

I would like to add 'cat attack'. Kinda funny isn't it?

What I meant by 'cat attack' is that you keep extreme silent position without any movement and then make an aggressive move to the direction the instruction asks you to move. This will help coordinating the foot movement to your nerves.

I think footwork requires conditioning which 729 and Varghese had talked about. It is divided into three parts, speed and agility, endurance, and strength.
1. Speed and Agility: Jump rope, single leg jump rope, two rotation per jump (or higher), accelerate while running (i.e. not constant speed), change of direction runs, change of speed runs (slow sown and speed up), footwork without blade, etc.
2. endurance: 1000meter runs, 1500meter runs, long walks, etc
3. Strength: do all the footwork with weights, double leg jumps, run up stairs, etc.

I do only two of the above, jumping rope and walking for 45 minutes. One thing to remember, when you practice speed you need to be in fresh condition while endurance can be practice under all conditions, even when you are tired.

Normally I do walking and jumping only. Will have to reassess my off-table training to improve on other aspects.

Fantastic training program, 729 :!: :P Wait, that's exactly the same as mine. I think that unless you have big, I mean really big ambitions you do more, but I have cut down to just these two that we share. I think that's enough. Running will make you want only to win, less social, because runners tend to play very close to the table and not moving at all (aka Peter Chen style  ). Running and competing could do that--makes one passive aggressive. So considering the elements in sports that can make a overall satifying, helthy, and balanced life, jumping rope and walking sound very complete to me. Keep up the good work, 729!

Blame us all. I had a friend visiting from Hong Kong. He is a Chinese JPen player. He has amazing footwork. Here is his other side: he is a marathon runner, a basketball player. He plays like Ryu Seung Min and Kim Taoek Soo.

OK. So may be I shouldn't make the judgement based on the few runners that I met.

Well I used to run half marathon till I find walking/hiking/hill climbing more entertaining than running. I do played basketball too (see the similarity as per varghese's comments earlier). And I play penhold (although I alternate to shakehand sometimes), whether Jpen or cpen.
